5 copywriting Tips & Tricks to help you get the most of your writing
Writing a unique marketing copy can become a challenge quite quickly. Whether you’re struggling with a demanding client or just starting to write your first copy, these 5 copywriting tips and tricks will always help you to get started.
1. Gather information
Take as many notes from your client’s brief as possible. Even the tiniest detail, such as the way they speak about their vision, can become pivotal in your copy.
Tip: Write down benefits of the product/service, quotes from the client on what they say about their business or product, keywords you can later use for SEO.
2. What is the message?
Talk to your client about their business. Listen to what message they are trying to communicate out. WRITE IT DOWN. Their message should be clear, short and easy to remember.
Tip: Keep the message to one line only and be specific.
E.g. Notes: New family coffee brand called ‘Good Morning’ is hitting the market. They produce organic, fair-trade, high-quality coffee beans that are being roasted locally and by a family tradition.
Now let’s be honest. There are millions of coffee brands out there. So how do you make your clients stand out? Here are a few examples of good and not so good copy:
Not quite right: ‘Good Morning’ is an organic, fair-trade and locally roasted coffee that will make your mornings worth it.
Good copy: ‘Good Morning’. Roasted by a family. To be enjoyed by a family. Organic coffee from next door.
See the difference? Your copy should be based on your client’s strengths and uniqueness. In this case, it’s the family tradition.
3. Who are you talking to?
Never forget to ask this question. Who is your audience? Your client should know. However, even they can be unsure of the demographics if their product is new and their target audience is not yet determined. If this is the case, write down your client’s idea on their ideal customer.
Tip: Ask questions such as: How does your customer use this product? What does your customer look like or feel like? How can this product affect your customer’s life?
These questions will help both you and your client to start.
4. Call to action! (CTA)
I can not stress this enough. Call your customers to action. Tell them what you want them to do. Should they read your article? Include a ‘Read Now’ CTA. Should they buy your service? Add a ‘Contact Me’ button or ‘Buy Now’. Make it visible, easy to get to and user-friendly. Don’t tiptoe around your customer. Make yourself loud and proud.
Tip: A great copy should link to other products on the page and have a seamless and straightforward customer journey throughout. Test your CTA with your family and friends.
5. Review
Most mistakes are done when you create in a flow that can not be interrupted. That’s okay! But don’t forget to read your copy before you share it with your client.
Tips: Read your copy out loud. Check out the words you used and make sure you elevate them. Try to avoid words like good or nice and be a bit more specific. Words like impressive, thoughtfully crafted are much more engaging. Don’t forget to use a spell check.
How does your copy make you feel? Your intuition is an important part of your writing. Don’t take it for granted. Make sure you feel what you have created and get prepared to share it with the world.
